First-Time Competition Parent Tips: What I Wish I Knew
Walking into your child’s first dance competition is an exciting milestone—but it can also feel overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect. One of our amazing Pinnacle parents recently shared some reflections after their first competition, and we thought it was too good not to pass along. These tips will help new families feel prepared, confident, and ready to enjoy the experience.
1. Peg Exchanges
Who knew this was a thing!? Kids decorate their own pegs and swap them with others at competitions. It’s a fun tradition and a great way for them to connect, so have a few decorated pegs ready to go.
2. Duck Exchanges
Another surprise! At some competitions, children can trade rubber ducks at designated stations. It adds to the sense of fun and community.
3. Snacks Matter
Pack easy, mess-free snacks that give your child energy between routines. Think fruit, muesli bars, or crackers—something that won’t make a mess of costumes.
4. Lipstick Timing
Don’t put lipstick on until just before you hand your child over to the coach—it saves a lot of smudges and mess!
5. Pack a Change of Clothes
If your child arrives in costume, remember to bring something comfy for them to change into after they perform. They’ll be much happier on the trip home.
6. Slip-On Shoes
Slip-off shoes or slides are a must between dances. They make quick changes easier and keep your dancer comfortable. Dancers shouldn't wear there dance shoes outside the dance hall to keep them clean.
7. Stay Connected
Make sure you’re in the correct BAND chat for your group. Competition schedules and updates can change quickly, so this is the best way to stay informed.
8. Seating
Don’t stress too much about where you sit. Most competitions allow you to move closer when it’s your child’s turn to perform. Many Pinnacle parents like to sit together to cheer on the kids as a group.
9. Label Everything
Costumes, shoes, bags—name it all. Things get mixed up easily in the hustle and bustle backstage.
10. The Community Spirit
Perhaps the most important takeaway: while the atmosphere at competitions can feel intense, the kids absolutely love it. They make new friendships, support each other, and enjoy being part of something special. Parents, too, often walk away with a sense of belonging to a wonderful community.
Final Thoughts
Allstar competitions aren’t just about trophies—they’re about teamwork, resilience, and creating lasting memories. With a little preparation (and a few pegs or ducks in your bag!), your first competition experience can be exciting, smooth, and full of joy.
At Pinnacle Performing Arts, we love seeing our dancers shine on stage and our families feel supported every step of the way.
